The Best Photography Locations & Places to Visit in Pictou County, Nova Scotia
If you're looking for beautiful places to take photos in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, you're in luck. From sandy beaches and waterfalls to historic lighthouses, forest trails, farms and scenic lookoffs, Pictou County is filled with incredible backdrops for photography.
As a local photographer, I'm always looking for new places to explore, whether I'm photographing families, couples, engagements, maternity sessions, seniors, elopements or simply capturing beautiful memories.
So I put together a list of some of my favourite Pictou County photography locations and places worth visiting. Some are well-known, while others are little hidden gems that are perfect for exploring.
Coastal & Beach Photography Locations
1. Arisaig Provincial Park & Lighthouse
Arisaig is one of those places that gives you a little bit of everything. Rocky coastline, ocean views, interesting geological features and the charming lighthouse make this a beautiful location for photography.
It's especially beautiful during golden hour when the coastline catches the evening light.
Perfect for: Couples, families, maternity sessions, engagement photos and adventurous portraits.
2. Caribou Beach & Lighthouse
Caribou is another beautiful coastal location in Pictou County. The combination of the beach, lighthouse and surrounding landscape creates lots of variety without having to travel far between locations.
It's also a great place to stop if you're exploring the area or heading toward the ferry.
3. Melmerby Beach
One of the most popular beaches in Pictou County, Melmerby is known for its long sandy shoreline and warm Northumberland Strait waters.
For photographers, the beach offers plenty of room for movement, sandy shoreline photos and beautiful sunset portraits.
Best time for photos: Golden hour and sunset.
4. Pictou Landing Beach
If you're looking for a beautiful coastal backdrop without needing a complicated hike, Pictou Landing is worth checking out.
The shoreline, rocks and water create a beautiful natural setting for relaxed family and couples photography.
5. Waterside Beach
Waterside Beach is a fantastic option for anyone looking for a quieter beach setting. It combines a long sandy beach with salt marsh and open fields, giving photographers several different backdrops in one location.
6. Pictou Island
For the ultimate adventure, take the seasonal ferry from Caribou to Pictou Island.
With sandy beaches, coastal scenery, trails and a lighthouse, it's a dream location for anyone who loves exploring somewhere a little different.
This would be an especially fun location for an adventurous couples session or an entire day of exploring and photography.
Parks, Forests & Waterfalls
7. Greenhill Look-Off
If you want a view instead of a beach, Greenhill is one of the places I would put high on your list.
The elevated lookout provides beautiful views across the Pictou County countryside, making it especially pretty in the fall when the landscape changes colour.
Perfect for: Family photos, couples, engagement sessions and sunset portraits.
8. Trenton Park
Trenton Park is a classic Pictou County photography location and a great option throughout the year.
It's particularly versatile for family and graduation photography because you can find greenery, pathways and different natural backdrops throughout the park.
9. Iona Park – Hopewell
Iona Park in Hopewell is another beautiful place to explore if you're looking for a quieter, natural setting.
10. Celiah Park – Hopewell
Another Hopewell gem! This is a great spot to add to your list when you're exploring the area and looking for natural scenery.
11. Hopewell Waterfall & Footbridge
Hopewell is home to beautiful river scenery and one of the area's historic footbridges. The Hopewell footbridge dates back to the 1800s and is one of the surviving historic footbridges in North America.
The combination of the river, trees, bridge and surrounding landscape makes this a beautiful location for photos.
12. Greenvale Falls
If waterfalls are your thing, Greenvale Falls is another Pictou County spot worth exploring.
Waterfalls are especially beautiful for photography after rainfall or during seasons when the surrounding foliage is lush.
13. Park Falls
Park Falls is another beautiful waterfall location — but please use extreme caution here. Some areas can be dangerous, so this isn't one I'd recommend casually wandering around without knowing the area well.
Farms, Gardens & Unique Locations
14. Various Local Farms
For a completely different look, farms can make amazing photography locations.
Think open fields, rustic textures, fences, barns and beautiful evening light. Reese Farm is a great option if you're looking for that classic Nova Scotia countryside photography feel.
15. Green Thumb Greenhouse
Greenhouses are such a fun alternative to traditional outdoor photography locations.
The plants, flowers, greenery and natural light can create a completely different look from a beach or forest session.
This is especially fun for spring and summer portraits.
16. The Grist Mill
For history and rustic Nova Scotia charm, The Grist Mill in MacPherson’s Mills is another location worth adding to your Pictou County adventure list. The site combines historic architecture with natural surroundings.
It's a great choice if you love photographs that feel a little more rustic, timeless and storybook-like.

17. Pictou Waterfront & Jitney Trail
The Pictou waterfront is one of my favourite types of locations for photographs because you can get water, boats, historic buildings and beautiful walking areas all in one place.
The Jitney Trail follows the waterfront for approximately 3 km and connects toward the site of the Hector's historic landing.
It's perfect for a casual session where you want the photographs to feel natural rather than overly posed.
18. New Glasgow Waterfront & Carmichael Park
Don't overlook New Glasgow!
The riverfront and surrounding parks can provide beautiful urban-meets-nature photography opportunities, especially during golden hour and fall.
19. Toney River Wharf
If you're looking for a classic Maritime fishing-wharf feel, Toney River is another spot worth exploring. Local tourism resources specifically highlight local wharves as postcard-worthy photography locations.
