“When is the best time of year to have family photos taken?”
The truth is, there isn't one perfect season.
Pictou County is beautiful year-round, and every season brings something completely different to your family photos. Whether you dream of wildflowers, sandy beaches, colourful fall trees or a snowy Nova Scotia adventure, there is a season that will give you exactly the look you're hoping for.
Here's my guide to choosing the best time of year for family photography in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.
Spring Family Photos in Pictou County
Spring is when everything starts coming back to life.
The trees begin to turn green, flowers start blooming and there's something really special about photographing families outdoors after a long Nova Scotia winter.
Spring sessions are perfect if you love:

Spring can also be a wonderful time for families who don't want the heat and busier feeling of summer.

My spring session tip:
Keep your clothing soft and natural and don't be afraid of colour! Pastels, creams, soft blues, pinks and earthy tones photograph beautifully against spring greenery.
Summer Family Photos
Summer is probably the first season that comes to mind when you think about outdoor family photos.
And in Pictou County, we have so many incredible places to take advantage of it.

Pictou County's beaches make beautiful summer photography locations, especially around golden hour.
Melmerby Beach, Caribou and Pictou Landing are just a few places where you can create completely different looks.
And don't worry if your kids don't sit still.
They're not supposed to.

Fall is hard to beat.
Pictou County becomes a completely different place when the leaves begin changing.
The forests turn gold, orange and red, and locations that look completely different during the summer suddenly become incredible photography backdrops.

When should you book?
Fall is one of the busiest times of year for photographers in Nova Scotia.
If you're hoping for colourful fall family photos in Pictou County, don't wait until the leaves are already changing to book.
September and October dates can fill quickly.
Winter Family Photos
Yes — you absolutely can have beautiful family photos in winter!
And winter sessions can be some of the most magical.
Imagine:
Fresh snow
Evergreen trees
Cozy sweaters
Warm drinks
Soft winter light
Cozy, rustic locations
You don't necessarily need a huge amount of snow either. A snowy forest or quiet winter landscape can create a beautiful, timeless look.
Winter is also a great option if you want something different from the typical summer family photos.
My favourite winter tip:
Layer!
Sweaters, scarves, mittens, boots and cozy textures photograph beautifully and also make it much easier to stay comfortable during your session.
What About Golden Hour?
No matter what season you choose, one of my favourite times to photograph families is golden hour.
Golden hour is the period shortly before sunset when the sunlight becomes softer and warmer.
It creates that beautiful glowing light you often see in outdoor photography.
It's especially magical at locations with:
Open fields
Beaches
Look-offs
Water
Tall grasses
Wildflowers
This is one reason I don't always recommend choosing a session time based solely on convenience.
The light can completely change the look and feel of your photographs.
So, When Is the BEST Time for Family Photos in Pictou County?
Honestly?
It depends on what you want your photographs to feel like.
Want flowers and fresh greenery? → Spring
Want beaches and warm summer evenings? → Summer
Want colourful trees and cozy fall colours? → Fall
Want something magical and completely different? → Winter
And if you're not sure, that's completely okay.
