What to Wear for Family Photos in Pictou County, Nova Scotia
One of the first questions I hear when someone books a family photography session is:
“What are we supposed to wear?”
Honestly, I get it.
Choosing outfits for the entire family can feel like one more thing to worry about, especially when you're already trying to get everyone ready, fed and out the door on time.
The good news?
You don't have to perfectly coordinate.
When I'm photographing families in Pictou County, I want your photographs to feel natural, timeless and true to your family. Your outfits are simply part of the story.
Here are some of my favourite tips for choosing what to wear for your next Pictou County family photography session.
Start With Neutrals & Earthy Tones
Soft, natural colours photograph beautifully outdoors.
Think:
Cream
Beige
White
Tan
Soft brown
Sage green
Dusty blue
Muted pink
Terracotta
Warm grey
These colours work especially well against the beaches, forests, fields and waterfalls around Pictou County.
You don't need everyone wearing the exact same colour.
Instead, think about creating a colour palette.
For example:
Cream + tan + sage + denim
or
Soft pink + beige + cream + brown
This creates a coordinated look without making everyone look like they're wearing a uniform.
Think About Your Location
One of the best ways to choose your outfits is to think about where we're taking your photographs.
Beach session
Flowy dresses, linen, soft neutrals and barefoot photos can look beautiful.
Forest session
Earth tones, warm textures, boots, sweaters and layered outfits work beautifully.
Fall session
Think cozy sweaters, denim, boots, scarves and warm colours.
Waterfall or adventure session
Choose clothing that allows you to move.
You don't want to spend your entire session worrying about keeping a dress perfectly clean.
Your location should influence your outfits, but it shouldn't dictate them completely.
Don't Be Afraid of Dresses
Flowy dresses and skirts photograph beautifully, especially outdoors.
Movement in fabric creates something extra in photographs and can make an image feel much more natural and dynamic.
